On Friday we had a combined family dinner to celebrate my Dad and sister’s birthdays and I was in charge of the cake! A couple of years ago I started a semi-tradition of making a special cake for each birthday that we celebrated in the family. The inspiration came from the ‘Indulgent Cakes’ by Australian Women’s Weekly and used the excuse to try out some new recipes and baking techniques. It’s funny looking back I can remember something new that I learnt from each cake that I’ve made. One cake I learnt how to make ganache properly, another I made toffee, or perfected my buttercream recipe etc.
For this cake however, Pinterest was my inspiration (in fact I’ve got a whole board dedicated to cakes! – follow me) so I decided a death by chocolate with a coffee twist ‘theme’ was appropriate!
- 2 x 20cm cakes – I just used our easy chocolate cake recipe with the addition of some Kahlua (coffee liqueur)
- Coffee Buttercream
- Dark chocolate ganache
- Toblerone, Oreos, chocolate coated coffee beans, dark chocolate Tim Tams, Cherry Ripe, Tiramisu Kit Kat, melting moments, espresso Kit Kat, dark chocolate Malteasers, Ferrero Rocher, Twix, Cappuccino wafers
I am really happy with the final result and it definitely had the wow factor! It was very sweet and all together quite rich, so I am very glad I made the simple chocolate cake rather than a mud cake.
